Swedish mobilization for smarter cities, sustainable transport and the jobs of the future

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

VINNOVA has today granted funds for the establishment phase of the strategic innovation programme “Automated Transport System”. Lindholmen Science Park is host to this venture, which comprises and is supported by large portions of Sweden’s telecom and automotive industry, the relevant government agencies, universities of technology and Sweden’s two largest cities.

The vehicles of the future will need no drivers. Advanced technology and completely new solutions will enable vehicles to be driven in a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The major challenge lies in integrating already developed technical solutions with each other and implementing them. It involves the complex interaction between city planning and infrastructure expansion, and the use of smart IT and communications solutions, which function in coordination with the vehicles of the future.

“We are on the threshold of a paradigm shift of huge proportions. All the rules are now being changed,” says Catharina Elmsäter-Svärd, Chairman elect of the strategic innovation program. “Sweden has a golden position. We have world-leading industries, strong universities, forward-thinking government agencies and, above all, our recognized ability to collaborate. Accordingly, in the framework of this research program, we have gathered the foremost expertise to resolve these challenges.”

“The technology is sufficiently mature and the need is greater than ever to manage continued urbanization with congestion, traffic safety and sustainability, alongside the burgeoning human requirement for mobility of people and products,” says Niklas Wahlberg, President of Lindholmen Science Park. “The program could lead to the development of entirely new services and the foundation of new companies. It involves a unique connection between the Swedish automotive and telecommunications industries. There is considerable potential in this.”
