SEK 150 million for environmental innovations

Passenger and freight transport in cities is one of the major future environmental challenges. The ‘Sustainable Transport in an Urban Environment’ project at Lindholmen Science Park has therefore received SEK 4.5 million from Vinnova for the development of new concepts in the area of sustainable transport.
Vinnova invests in the development of new solutions to reduce climate and environmental impact for the sustainable society of the future. Their ‘Environmental Innovations’ programme is awarding a total of SEK 150 million to R&D projects, which can contribute to increased growth and reduced environmental impact. The ‘Sustainable Transport in an Urban Environment’ project, with Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg as principal, is one such project and has therefore been allocated SEK 4.5 million.
The project’s objective is to contribute to sustainable urban development:
- We need an increased understanding of how existing infrastructure and transport systems can be optimised without making excessive investments. Meanwhile we also see an increased need to integrate advanced IT in future transport solutions, says Niklas Wahlberg, CEO, Lindholmen Science Park AB.
The project will seek to bring together the different perspectives in urban planning, transport, logistics technology and automotive technology. These areas are often separated from each other, but by uniting them new knowledge and guidelines are created for using new solutions in both new and existing urban planning projects.
- We see good prospects for developing competence and creating future competitive opportunities in the area of sustainable transport solutions in urban environments, says Niklas Wahlberg, CEO, Lindholmen Science Park.
The project will run for three years (2010-2013) and is led by Lindholmen Science Park. The other partners are Volvo Technology, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg City Traffic Office and Älvstranden Utveckling AB.
