Creative power for a democratic society

Systemic innovation for creative diversity and democracy

DemoCreate is now starting - a national and cross-cutting innovation project for the creative sector. By unleashing and strengthening the democratic and innovative power of cultural and creative industries, the goal is to build a dynamic and inclusive society that safeguards the fundamental freedoms of all citizens.

The initiative assumes that a free and vibrant cultural life is fundamental to Swedish prosperity and competitiveness, and intends to become a gathering arena for mission-driven research, collaboration and development at the interface of creativity, digitization and democracy. DemoCreate shall identify crucial innovation potentials of the creative sphere and address issues of creation, production, dissemination, access and exchange of cultural goods and services in rapid technological change.

The creative sector has a decisive societal importance for welfare and growth. In 2020, the creative industries' share of the EU countries' turnover was higher than both the pharmaceutical and automotive industries. A vibrant and diverse cultural life together with a strong and viable creative industry is the key to democratic and economic growth in all sectors of society, but this relationship needs to be protected and developed.

DemoCreate is highlighted as strategically important within Impact Innovation, a new initiative by the Swedish Energy Agency, Formas and Vinnova, and has been awarded support to investigate the conditions for establishing a system-changing innovation program. Impact Innovation is Sweden's major innovation investment for the 2030s and mobilizes actors from business, academia, the public sector and civil society to meet the societal challenges of our time - and the future.

The work to develop and enable the strategic innovation program is led by Lindholmen Science Park in collaboration with Gothenburg University, Blekinge Institute of Technology, Stockholm School of Economics and the CreARTive network, and will in the future include a large number of partners and sub-investments.  The new knowledge and innovation group will collaborate nationally and internationally with the creative sector's future entrepreneurs, driving its pioneering ventures and delivering innovative solutions to the challenges facing the industries.
