Kunskapsträff with workshop: Sustainable civil preparedness

-
Arranged by:
Lindholmen Science Park

How can we practice and strengthen our ability to maintain the municipality’s everyday responsibilities in this new era of heightened uncertainty? How can we build urban development and municipal services that remain resilient when society is tested under the most challenging conditions?

THE CHALLENGE WE FACE
Municipalities carry significant responsibility for civil preparedness (including civil defence and emergency preparedness). However, when faced with extreme events—and, in the worst-case scenario, war—the real challenge lies in maintaining high-quality municipal services and continued urban development. Preparedness affects every aspect of society: energy, green infrastructure, food supply, and social sustainability. The challenge is to identify our vulnerabilities, minimize risks, manage inherent conflicts of interest, and understand how we can build a resilient society in everyday practice—one that can adapt and recover quickly when disruptions occur.

THE PATH TO SHARED BENEFIT
We want to explore the intersections between sustainable development, robustness, and resilience, and how these can create value within our regular municipal responsibilities already in peacetime. By integrating a social and empathetic perspective, we can strengthen trust and collaboration—key foundations for building societal resilience and public willingness to contribute to collective defence efforts, which in turn provide stronger protection in times of crisis.

We need to identify practical ways to rapidly restore critical functions and prepare civilian resources to meet society’s needs during crises and wartime.

To achieve this, we ask questions such as:

  • How does our city function under more vulnerable or stressed conditions? What new demands are placed upon us?
  • What prevents us from collaborating effectively during a crisis?
  • What tools can we use to strengthen our readiness to act?
  • Can games and immersive methods be used as training and preparedness tools?
  • Could Virtual Gothenburg, the city’s digital twin, serve as a peacetime training environment to build preparedness and decision-making capacity for a broader range of stakeholders?

HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE
We invite you to a knowledge-sharing event and workshop where we will explore these questions together. We will test game-based methods, learn from best practices and leading knowledge, and gain inspiration for new insights. The goal is to build networks and collaboration between stakeholders, and to identify concrete actions—including project ideas—that bring us closer to solutions for sustainable robustness and resilience.
