Mobility at Lindholmen Science Park: Our impact 2025
Lindholmen Science Park Mobility is a national catalyst that accelerates Sweden's social development. We are a neutral arena where business, academia and the public sector meet to solve complex challenges within resilient infrastructure and sustainable societal transformation.
The business is based on collaborations and knowledge building. Our networks bring together 735 partners and in collaboration we ran 109 projects in 2025. Together we strengthen Swedish competitiveness and through collaborations with actors in 28 countries we increase knowledge and broaden perspectives. The results of all initiatives are visible both on our roads, where 11 percent of Sweden's electric trucks roll within our projects, and on the railways where automation of goods handling helps increase terminal capacity by up to 40 percent.
Progress and lessons learned from projects we have run have, among other things, enabled Apoteket's journey towards 90 percent fossil-free deliveries, contributed to 12 international startups being integrated into the Lindholmen Science Park ecosystem and 42 sharp rescue operations with drones taking place in 2025. Concrete results that contribute to reduced emissions, increased accessibility and saved lives. Below you can take a look at some of the projects and collaborations that shaped this year's results.
Our ability to create real change rests on deep domain knowledge in several critical sectors of society. By bringing together expertise from widely different areas – from advanced logistics and energy systems to health innovation and resilient infrastructure – we enable solutions that no single actor can achieve on their own. It is at the intersection of these areas of expertise that we accelerate the sustainable transition and strengthen Sweden's competitiveness.

Our positive impressions
Our positive impact is noticeable through all the electric trucks – which make up 11 percent of all heavy electric trucks in Sweden – that are rolling within our projects and that 42 drone-supported rescue operations took place during the year. But also in the port of Umeå, which is being tested as an energy node for shipping, in tests of autonomous vehicles and in work with new digital automatic couplers for trains. Together, we and all our partners create solutions that lower emissions, increase efficiency, accessibility and safety and secure Sweden's future competitiveness.
33 doctoral students
Research is a central part of Lindholmen Science Park. Through forward-looking and thorough research, we improve the opportunities to drive a sustainable and efficient transition. Through longer-term initiatives, such as Triple F, E-Charge and ElectriCity, doctoral students are funded who have the opportunity to work on innovative projects, in collaboration with other parties that drive development.
Sustainable e-commerce
E-commerce is a key factor for the mobility of the future. Within the ASTER program (now Next Gen Retail), which ended in 2025, we have demonstrated through collaboration that environmental benefit and economic efficiency go hand in hand.
The industry agreement: From vague concepts to measurable impact
Before the industry agreement for fossil-free deliveries, clear definitions were lacking, which created uncertainty for both businesses and consumers. By establishing a common standard, the initiative – driven by ASTER (now Next Gen Retail) and Svensk Handel – has given retailers a concrete framework to restructure their transport while maintaining profitability.

E-com Ready: Optimized packaging
The project focused on developing sustainable e-commerce packaging. Pilot tests with Apotea and Blomsterlandet showed significant results.
"The project provided us with valuable methodology and data, as well as enabling the industry collaboration required to create sustainable solutions."
Erika Svensson, Sustainability Manager at Apotea
2025: From testing to real benefit
During the year, we have increased the pace to translate visions into practical solutions that make a difference for the transportation system here and now.
Through 16 initiatives for autonomous or automated vehicles and with over 120 heavy electric trucks – which corresponds to 11 percent of all heavy electric trucks in Sweden – within our projects, we create results that lower emissions and strengthen Swedish industry. In everything from projects with groundbreaking megawatt charging to tests with sharp rescue operations with drone support, we show how collaboration can drive an effective and sustainable transition. In the films here you can see results from the year linked to autonomous solutions and the electrification of heavy transport.
Global collaborations accelerate Swedish mobility
Innovation requires cross-border collaborations to reach from research to practical use. Within the framework of MobilityXlab, 12 new startups from eight countries have been integrated into the Lindholmen Science Park ecosystem in 2025. This creates direct opportunities for Swedish industry to validate groundbreaking technology in real environments.
A concrete example of this impact is the CoTwin project . What began as a collaboration between the startup CanaryBit and Ericsson has grown into a broad partnership project. By enabling the integrity-secure sharing of vehicle data, CoTwin paves the way for completely new business and revenue models in the mobility sector.
Climate-leading Process Industry works for a fossil-free and competitive chemical and process industry in Western Sweden
The ten-year initiative completed its second of three stages in 2025 and here you can hear a selection of the initiative's members talk about their results and the importance of the collaboration
"Here you have a smorgasbord of companies that are experts in different areas, and that is the smorgasbord we want to access, while the others want to access our expertise, our challenges and our resources. So it is a win-win for everyone to be part of the Climate-Leading Process Industry."
Christopher de Flon, Gryab
Drones for Early Situational Awareness
In February 2025, testing of autonomous drones equipped with defibrillators and high-resolution video cameras for early situational awareness began, within the framework of the PreViS project and the PICTA Prehospital Innovation Arena program.
After about ten exercises, the drone has flown in real operation in the city of Mölndal to see early situational awareness in the event of major traffic accidents, fires in buildings, drowning incidents and deliver defibrillators. In connection with 42 alarms in 2025, it provided images to the emergency center, which quickly got an idea of how much blue light resources they need to send.
The drone project is a close collaboration between the Västra Götaland Region, the Healthcare Emergency Center, Everdrone and the Rescue Service in Greater Gothenburg.
How we make a difference – three current examples
Our impact occurs on several levels simultaneously – from local ports in the north to national support systems and global partnerships. By translating research into concrete benefits, we strengthen both socially important functions and Sweden's future competitiveness. Here you can see how we are in practice paving the way for sustainable shipping, developing the tools for more equal ambulance care and attracting international establishments to Sweden.
Freight trains of the future: DAC revolutionizes European railways
With digital automatic coupling (DAC), European railways will become faster, safer and more competitive.
DAC replaces today's heavy and dangerous manual work with screw couplers by automatically connecting freight cars. The coupler also connects electrical and data lines throughout the train. With the automated process together with the development of signaling systems, terminal capacity can increase by up to 40 percent.
Extensive testing has been carried out in 2024 and 2025 within the FP5-DACtiVate and FP5-TRANS4M-R projects. The focus has been on derailment safety in sharp curves. The results show that DAC systems from different manufacturers work well together and can withstand the extreme compressive forces required to ensure safety.
Micromobility
Micromobility and micrologistics have the potential to reduce congestion in the transport system, reduce emissions and contribute to more physical movement. But their use raises many questions; what is required for the vehicles to be used safely, securely and efficiently? Through the Micromobility Network initiative funded by Drive Sweden, for example, a ban on shared electric scooters could be avoided. Instead, stakeholders are coming together to jointly set the rules of the game. Drive Sweden has also contributed to technology development through several projects, including battery replacement systems for delivery couriers and smart charging stations for electric scooters.
