100 new Ericsson engineers at the heart of 5G

Thursday, April 23, 2020

Ericsson is now recruiting 100 new engineers to Lindholmen to strengthen the development of the 5G network. Work on the fifth generation mobile network, which will provide 10 times faster connectivity, will have a global penetration and influence people around the world.

- At Ericsson Lindholmen, we already have world-leading expertise in mobile data communications, and this position is further strengthened by this decision, says Karl-Johan Killius, Head of the Product Development Unit Packet Core.

Packet Core is the core network that handles the mobile data traffic. One end of the network has masts with base radio stations to which the mobile phones are connected. These, in turn, are connected to the core network, which leads traffic to the internet. It is the development of this core network that is carried out and managed from Lindholmen – in other words, Ericsson works with the heart of 5G.

- We hope and believe that many developers will see it as a fantastic opportunity to contribute to this important and exciting technological development, adds Karl-Johan.

Ericsson's is mainly seeking software developers - engineers who want to work with advanced and demanding software development. The systems that Ericsson develops handle millions of subscribers, and they have to do it in real time, which places additional demands on them. The demand on the availability of the systems is also very high. They must always work.

Even at the beginning of the fifth generation of mobile systems, there are many new areas of application that will emerge. In addition, the core networks are based on the latest cloud technologies - an area that is rapidly developing. Ericsson was involved in the establishment of Lindholmen Science Park 20 years ago, but the start of the development of mobile computer systems stretches further back in time.

- In the 1980s, mobile computer systems were developed here in Gothenburg, and a great deal of pioneering expertise was established in this field. Since then, the capability has been improved and carried on to new generations of engineers, says Karl-Johan Killius in an interview in GP.
