Inauguration of unique electric bicycle pool in Gothenburg

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

On October 23, a complete electric bicycle pool will be inaugurated at Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg. The fully automatic garage is a unique solution, where the bicycles are hung to protect them from weather and theft, and recharged using solar panels. With a simple mobile click, the bicycle is automatically hoisted down and out of the garage, and delivered to the commuter.

“The electric bicycle pool will be an excellent complement to Lindholmen’s car pools and hybrid-electric bus service. It will provide another means of sustainable travel,” says Niklas Wahlberg, CEO, Lindholmen Science Park.

Companies Off Course and Move About have jointly developed the unique electric bicycle pool as part of the Elmob collaborative project. The project is led by the City of Gothenburg and aims to facilitate sustainable travel in Gothenburg by introducing electric-powered, shared transport solutions.

“This is a very convenient option for short distances. Many people find normal bikes exhausting and nobody likes being sweaty when they arrive at work. That makes electric bike a great choice,” says Martin Franzén, CEO of Off Course.

The bicycles are hung and stored securely, protected from weather and vandalism. Upon arrival at the garage, the commuter responds to a text message and the bicycle is hoisted down from its theft-proof mount. A helmet automatically follows in a specially designed box and rain ponchos are also available in the garage.

Off Course AB, which makes and sells the Off Course electric bicycle, has also developed the fully automatic garage. Move About is responsible for the technical operation of the pool, and the bikes are booked through the same booking and payment system as Move About’s electric cars.

“Most organizations use a combination of business travel options, such as taxis, mileage allowance, company cars and rental cars. For distances of less than ten kilometers, driving a car is both expensive and environmentally unsound. The combined electric bicycle and electric car pools will be a solution that meets the toughest possible environmental requirements, at the same time as they are cost-efficient and convenient for users,” says Ulf Jakobsson, Marketing Director at Move About.

New electric bicycle pool demonstrated at inauguration

On Friday, October 23, the new bicycle pool at Lindholmen Science Park will be inaugurated and in mid November, a similar pool will open at Johanneberg Science Park in Gothenburg.

The press and the general public are cordially invited to attend the inauguration, which will include a demonstration of the garage and an opportunity to test the electric bicycles.

Time: October 23, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Place: Outside the electric bicycle garage in the parking lot in front of the main building at Lindholmspiren 3-5.
