Region Skåne and Mobile Heights collaborate to create an AI-node in southern Sweden

Wednesday, August 28, 2019

Region Skåne extends its engagement within AI Innovation of Sweden by contributing to the creation of a node in southern Sweden, staking a total of 1.5 million Swedish kronor to ensure that it becomes a reality by 2021.

The first step is a preliminary study, led by the cluster organisation Mobile Heights. The preliminary study is financed by AI Innovation of Sweden, Region Skåne and Vinnova. The work with the pre- study is driven in a wide collaboration with interested parties from industry, academics and municipalities, as well as research parks and other players in the innovation system who have demonstrated interested in establishing a collaborative environment for research and innovation within applied AI in southern Sweden. The work should result in a recommendation for how a southern Swedish AI hub should be organised and financed in the long term.

'Sweden needs to its gather forces in order to benefit from the use of AI. It is important for our competitive strength in order to achieve increased productivity and to solve challenges in welfare. We welcome the government's backing and are proud of the trust to collectively establish the southern Swedish hub,' says Ulrika Geeraedts, Director of Development at Region Skåne.

'Establishment of a hub in southern Sweden would be very positive. We are very happy about the involvement of Region Skåne and Mobile Heights and look forward to jointly developing our ambitions to strengthen Swedish industry and Swedish welfare with application of AI, both in Skåne and Sweden as a whole,' says Martin Svensson, Co-Director, AI Innovation of Sweden.

AI Innovation of Sweden has already established a first hub in Lindholmen in Gothenburg, and a preliminary study relating to establishing an additional hub in Stockholm will be presented in September. The work with the preliminary study for Stockholm is driven by Kista Science City and financed by AI Innovation of Sweden and Vinnova.
