The collaborative project, Virtual Gothenburg Lab, is now under way. This means that the work on what should be included, tested and shown in Gothenburg's digital twin can start. A total of 25 parties are involved and they participated in the kick-off.

One of the world's most important congresses for electric transportation, the Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition, EVS38, will be held in Gothenburg on June 15-18, 2025. The event is aimed at a broad audience and experts who work to promote and enable electric mobility. Over 10,000 visitors are expected to attend the congress at the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre, and Lindholmen Science Park will be part of the program.

Gothenburg has great potential in the form of knowledge and competence – but it is not leading to many viable companies with their own intellectual property (IP) that can create long-term employment in the region. That was one of the messages when Innovation Bazaar – a meeting place for developing cooperation between vehicle manufacturers and software providers – was arranged for the last time at Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg on November 7.

Join us on a journey to the city’s infancy in the first and only visualization of Gothenburg in the 17th century. The film is part of Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary and is included in the exhibition “The Birth of Gothenburg" which opens at the Museum of Gothenburg on March 11. Gothenburg City Planning Authority is the first in the world to examine the interaction between autonomous vehicles and sustainable, long-term urban planning. The city is exploring the effects and benefits of technology, including, but not limited to, the future need for parking facilities, enhanced road safety, accessibility, and implications to the use of public space.

Buses that glide noiselessly without emissions, that pick up passengers indoors and which are powered by a renewable source of electricity – this will become a reality in 2015, through the launch of an ultramodern bus service in Gothenburg. The new technology enables completely new possibilities for future public-transport. Behind the initiative is the Volvo Group, in cooperation with the Swedish Energy Agency, Region Västra Götaland, the City of Gothenburg, Göteborg Energi, Västtrafik, Lindholmen Science Park and Johanneberg Science Park.

As of December, Västtrafik will introduce about 150 electric buses on 34 routes in Gothenburg, Mölndal and Partille. The scale-up makes western Sweden the largest region in the Nordics when it comes to electric buses and the large introduction of electric buses that the people of Gothenburg are now witnessing is in parts a result of the ElectriCity collaboration's tests on line 55 and EL16.

How can a joint film experience be shared in VR? That is what Visual Arena wants is attempting to find out in the project The Future Cinema, which is operated in collaboration with Aftonstjärnan cinema. The purpose is to investigate how the very best parts of the cinema experience - getting together - can be combined with the very best parts of virtual reality - being surrounded by the film - and to investigate how the possibilities of digitalisation can be utilised and develop the cinema culture.

Västtrafik is taking new steps in the transition to fully electric public transport. On 2 October they launched the first of a total of 30 new electric buses in Gothenburg. The new buses will operate on line 60. In addition, another 160 buses will be coming to the city next year and the goal is that within ten years all public transport in Western Sweden will be electric.

On May 24–25, 2025, the gates will open to the Gothenburg Classic Car Weekend, a unique festival where the history of the automotive industry meets the innovative technology of the future. At Lindholmen, Gothenburg’s mobility hub, the public and industry professionals will come together for an extraordinary experience.

Gothenburg is one of Europe’s most innovative cities — made clear by the fact that the city has gone to the finals in the European Capital of Innovation (iCapital) Award competition. The competition highlights the important role cities play in developing the solutions of the future for societal problems, in broad collaboration with other players.

The floating recycling centre, which has been operating on the Göta älv river, will remain afloat for an extended period. This was confirmed following the conclusion of the City of Gothenburg budget for 2020. “There is a lot of interest being shown from both the general public and politicians that we maintain a good waste management system that is fit for purpose,” says Marianne Erlandsson, Director of Administration at the Recycling and Water Department, City of Gothenburg.

Gothenburg is launching the public transport of the future. Gothenburg’s first route for electric buses will open on 15 June between Lindholmen Science Park and Johanneberg Science Park. The buses are silent and emission-free and run on electricity from wind power and hydropower. The bus route is among the most modern in the world. Among other things, passengers can recharge their phones onboard and enter and exit the bus from indoors.

A new electric cargo bike, which is ten times more energy efficient than an electric car, is currently being tested in Gothenburg. With its combination of convenience, comfort and safety, the hope is that it will serve as a replacement for short car trips.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, Gothenburg Mayor Ann-Sofie Hermansson, and their joint delegation visited Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (ZGH) headquarters in Hangzhou where they were welcomed by ZGH Chairman Mr Li Shufu and Group President Mr An Conghui. The two parties, Geely Auto Group (Geely Auto) and the City of Gothenburg signed a Letter of Intent to develop a 70,000 sq. metre Innovation Centre in the heart of Gothenburg, at Lindholmen Science Park.

Large companies want to open the door for start-up companies who are challenging themselves. And clusters within vehicles, ICT and life science are converging. Some 20-odd well-known companies provide a picture of Gothenburg Region's business sector in a report from Lindholmen Science Park and Sahlgrenska Science Park.

On October 23, a complete electric bicycle pool will be inaugurated at Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg. The fully automatic garage is a unique solution, where the bicycles are hung to protect them from weather and theft, and recharged using solar panels. With a simple mobile click, the bicycle is automatically hoisted down and out of the garage, and delivered to the commuter.

Nearly every passenger who rode the first self-driving bus in Gothenburg finds it safe and useful: this is just one of the learnings after completing the first part of the trials in Gothenburg.
