Upper secondary education is changing in step with electrification

Wednesday, November 29, 2023

When society changes, so do the professions and the training for them. This can be seen in the secondary school education.
''We have increased application pressure for the Electricity and Energy program, which I think is due to the fact that the students see that electrification is the future in many different areas'', says Martin Harari Turesson, teacher in the Electricity and Energy program at Lindholmen Technical High School.

When things that were previously manual or powered by combustion technology become electrically powered, the need for electricity in society increases, but also the need for labor with competence in electricity and energy. Electrification primarily affects students' needs for electrical education, electronics and electrical safety around working with batteries.
''Our students come into direct contact with all parts of the electrification that will be implemented in reality. This involves, for example, the installation of charging posts, solar cell systems, heat pumps, new electricity meters and troubleshooting in electrical systems'', explains Martin.

Electrification also increases education's need for collaboration with the industry.
''In connection with Novo's (Northvolt and Volvo) establishment here in Gothenburg, we are working to become part of the Competence center which will ensure that there are trained personnel in the area. Therefore, we will increase the number of students on the Electricity and Energy program by 25% and double the number of students on the Automation specialization. We hope to offer our students an internship at Northvolt's factory in Skellefteå so that they will be maximally prepared to start production immediately when Novo's factory opens in Gothenburg'', says Martin.
